Double Tongue Warm Up for Brass

This is an exercise I use to teach double tonguing for trombone. We usually start at 80 BPM, with the goal to work up to 120 or so over a semester. I assign exercise A the first week, B the second week, etc. It’s important to learn how to do this with legato tongue as well as staccato. If you cannot play the same note legato with a single tongue, then work on that skill first, do not try to learn double tongue until you have mastered single tongue legato.

I teach the syllables Toh Koh for this exercise, keeping in mind to keep the throat open and use a lot of air. I tell students to pretend they have an egg in the back of their throat so that they can get a large cavernous oh syllable, which translates to a better tone.
