Laura Vocab #1

This is a quote from JJ Johnson's version of Laura as heard on his "JJ In Person!" album which was released in 1958. I first heard it on his “Trombone Master” album, which was released in 1989. I learned the transcription, which is published.

This snippet is the second and third measure of his "solo," which is during the break over a V7(b9) to i. I use this quote from J.J. Johnson to teach how in Bebop, musicians used harmonic minor.

1. Play the A harmonic minor scale

2. Play A harmonic minor starting on B

3. Notice JJ Johnson used the A harmonic minor on the break at the start of his solo on Laura

Also notice he uses an enclosure - F to D to E - at the end of the phrase.

Truly genius improvisation, and well worth learning in all 12 keys!
