Sonnymoon for Two Guide Tones

One of the best ways to learn a new tune is to learn the guide tones for each chord.

“Guide Tones” refer to the “money notes”, usually the 3rds and 7ths of each chord, which is what gives each chord its tonal quality. They are also referred to “two note piano voicings”. If you are a beginning pianist, use these notes to get started.

The process we use to learn jazz often includes the guide tones because they like our guiding light as far as the harmony. The process is often learned by ear, and starts on either the 3rd or the 7th, and then move as little as possible to the 3rd or 7th of next chord. If the chords move down a fourth, such as I to V7, the movement is very little, by half step, if you start on the major 7th or the major 3rd.

This process helps you hear the resolution of chords and the leading tones. Take some time to also work these out on the piano, if you haven’t done so already. Below you will find guide tones for Sonnymoon for Two, transposed for each instrument (C treble, C bass, Bb, Eb). Click the button to download all four PDFs as a ZIP file.
