Honeysuckle Rose Vocab #1

I’ve heard a lot of soloists use this piece of vocabulary, and it goes well over any ii V7 chord progression. This piece of vocabulary, which has been quoted by many jazz and bebop musicians, starts with the first four notes of Honeysuckle Rose, then adds one note to resolve on the five of the V7. It starts on the 4 of the ii chord. I call it the Honeysuckle Rose vocab because it is so similar to Fats Waller’s original composition. Below is Ella Fitzgerald’s performance from her Ella and Basie album. Check out her scat solo! Scroll down to view the PDFs.
